Get Connected

The mission of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church is to transform the people of Lake Highlands and beyond by connecting through the love of Christ, deepening relationships with Christ, and serving with the heart of Christ.

“The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2:42

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together… but let us encourage one another.” Hebrews 10:24-25

When I was in college, I joined a “discipleship small group” (or “DSG” as they were called – my college was really into acronyms). Walking into my first small group meeting, I had no idea the great source of support and encouragement this group of people would be through my years at college. So much so, that my view of the importance of small groups was solidified, and has only grown since then. Walking through life alongside those who can “spur us on” (as the writer to the Hebrews encouraged) is invaluable.

At Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, we desire that each one of us find a place to connect through the love of Christ, deepen our relationships with Christ and serve with the heart of Christ.

Through plugging into one of our Groups (whether it be a Sunday morning class, a midweek Bible study small group or a group that meets in a home), you will have the opportunity to connect with others, to deepen your faith in Christ and to grow in your love and service for others.

As we connect with others, we are able to care for one another with the love of Christ. The Bible is full of “one another” commands -- love one another, be at peace with one another, build one another up, encourage one another, forgive one another, serve one another – the list goes on. We know there is no such thing as a “perfect community” (just like there are no “perfect people”!), but we feel the best place to learn to love and serve one another is in the context of doing life together as a small group.

Being a part of a Group helps us to deepen our relationships with Christ by studying God’s word together. Studying the Bible and other Christian books together gives us the accountability we need and the insights of others. Not only do we learn and discuss together, we can encourage one another to put what we learn into action.

As we grow in our faith in Christ, we also grow in our service to others. As James challenges us, “Do not merely listen to the word… do what it says” (James 1:22). The fruit of a growing relationship with Christ is the increasing capacity to serve like Christ did. We model a lifestyle of sacrifice; we seek out where God is calling us to serve; and we look for ways to share God’s love with others. (Each of our groups will have a chance to serve together in our community at least once during the semester.)

We would love for you to find a Group where you can connect, deepen and serve! I pray that you will experience the blessing and the benefit of doing life together in a small group at Lake Highlands UMC.

This fall, our primary Group opportunities are the Alpha Course and the New Testament Challenge Groups. Please visit the Groups page to learn more about these opportunities.
