LENT

LHUMC Background.png

Lake Highlands UMC Family,

Lent is the 40-day season of the Church that precedes Easter, not including Sundays. It is a time to reflect on our human frailty and sinfulness. It is a season of repentance, of removing the things in our lives that harm our relationship with God and others. It is a season to prepare our hearts for Easter.

Just as Jesus went to the cross before the resurrection, we, too, must allow something to die before we can be raised into new life. As we prepare for Lent, consider this question: What needs to die in me so that I might more fully experience resurrection life?

Many people observe Lent through fasting or self-denial. We may choose to give up something that is not necessarily sinful, but something to which we have grown overly attached, so that we can strengthen our connection with Jesus. If you are considering what to give up for Lent, ask yourself: What pulls me away from loving God, others, and myself?

In addition to giving something up, you might also consider what you could add during these 40 days. This could be a spiritual practice such as a prayer discipline or a Bible reading plan. Many people choose to read through one of the Gospels during Lent. Another option might be committing to a weekly act of service. If you are thinking about adding a practice, ask: What would most help me become more like Jesus right now?

Beginning on Ash Wednesday, in worship and in our Sunday groups, we will focus on the seven sayings of Jesus from the cross. When someone is nearing death, we lean in to hear their final words. During Lent, we will lean in and fix our eyes on the crucified Christ, listening carefully to the words he speaks before his final breath. It will be sobering. It may even be heartbreaking. But it will be worth it, because we know resurrection is coming. I invite you to join us in worship or in a Sunday group as we listen together.

A final word of pastoral encouragement: this is not a spiritual marathon. Do not try to do everything. Start small. Say no to one habit that keeps you from loving God and others. Say yes to one practice that helps you love God and others more deeply.

I am praying for you and for our church as we draw nearer to the cross this Lent. I look forward to seeing what God does in us as we encounter the risen Christ.

Because of Jesus,

Rev. Andy Roberts

Senior Pastor
