Book Club: Jesus the King

What: Jesus the King is Tim Keller’s look at the life of Christ as told in the Gospel of Mark. In it, Keller shows how the story of Jesus is at once cosmic, historical and personal, calling each of us to look anew at our relationship with God. We are shown insights into the life of Jesus as Keller explores how Jesus came as a king, but a king who had to bear the greatest burden anyone ever has. The book club will be spread out over two weeks (Part One: The King and Part Two: The Cross); feel free to come for one or both weeks.

When: Tuesdays, January 23 and February 13 ~ 7:00-8:30pm

Where: LHUMC Bride’s Room

Led by: Kari Olson
Cost: Cost of book (please purchase the book on your own)

Book Club: The Return of the Prodigal Son

What: A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on an unforgettable spiritual adventure. As Nouwen reflects on Rembrandt’s painting, he probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son’s return, the father’s restoration of sonship, the elder son’s resentfulness, and the father’s compassion. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as God loves, and to be loved as

God’s beloved, will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time.

When: Monday, March 4 ~ 6:30-8:00pm

Where: LHUMC Bride’s Room
