Description: The story of Jesus' birth in Matthew calls him Immanuel, "God with us," quoting the prophet Isaiah from over seven hundred years earlier. The prophet spoke to Israel in the midst of exile at the hands of Assyria, a time of grief, darkness, and doubt. Advent reminds us that we too are an exiled people, living in darkness and looking for the light.
