Local History

The first meeting of the Lake Highlands UMW (then known as the Woman’s Society of Christian Service) was held on April 30, 1956 in the home of Rev. & Mrs. Ken McIntosh.

Until the church building was completed, they met in many unusual places, ie., Sparkman-Brand Funeral Home, Gingham Girl Dance Studio & Harper’s Garage where heaters had to be lit the night before a meeting and blankets put down at the bottom of the door to keep out the cold.

The first Mother-Daughter Banquet was held in 1962 to raise funds for children's and women's work being done in Hong Kong by the McIntoshes who had become missionaries.  Proceeds from this event were sent to them as long as they were there.  Later proceeds were used to support mission work in Dallas thru Bethlehem Center, C.C. Young, Methodist Hospital and Wesley Rankin.

In 2008 we celebrated 50 years of service to our Church and to the community of local United Methodist Church missions.
